Slave Lake RCMP urge caution at crosswalks as students return to school

Slave Lake, Alta. – As students head back to class, the Slave Lake RCMP is asking both drivers and pedestrians to be extra cautious at crosswalks and intersections near schools. With more foot traffic during morning and afternoon commutes, the risk of collisions increases, especially if drivers or pedestrians are distracted.

Safety tips for drivers:

  • Slow down near crosswalks and intersections.
  • Be prepared to stop when approaching a marked crosswalk, even if the pedestrian hasn’t stepped onto the road yet.
  • Obey crossing guards and yield to pedestrians at all marked and unmarked crosswalks.
  • Avoid passing other vehicles stopped at a crosswalk — they may be yielding to someone you can’t see.

Safety tips for students and pedestrians:

  • Always look both ways before crossing.
  • Use designated crosswalks and obey crossing guards.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before stepping onto the road.
  • Put away phones and remove headphones while crossing.

“With students returning to school, we are urging drivers and pedestrians to slow down, pay attention, and use extra caution around crosswalks. A moment of care can prevent a serious tragedy,” said S/Sgt. Casey Bruyns, Detachment Commander of the Slave Lake RCMP.

Slave Lake RCMP remind students to stay safe and respectful online

Slave Lake, Alta. – As students return to the classroom, many will also be returning to increased social media activity. The Slave Lake RCMP is reminding youth and parents about the importance of safe, respectful, and responsible online behaviour. Cyberbullying, online harassment, and sharing personal information can have serious and lasting consequences. Students are encouraged to think carefully before posting, and to speak up if they experience or witness harmful behaviour online.

Online safety tips for students:

  • Never share personal information such as your full name, address, school, or phone number publicly.
  • Treat others online with the same respect you would in person.
  • Think before you post — once something is online, it’s hard to remove.
  • If you are being bullied online, do not respond. Save the evidence, block the person, and tell a parent, teacher, or trusted adult.
  • Remember that threats, harassment, or sharing intimate images without consent can be criminal offences.

Online safety tips for parents:

  • Talk regularly with your child about their online activities.
  • Set clear rules and expectations for device use.
  • Monitor privacy settings on all accounts and apps.
  • Encourage open communication so your child feels comfortable coming to you with concerns.

Coffee with a Cop

The Slave Lake RCMP is dedicated to maintaining direct open lines of communication with the communities we serve. We would like to get to know area residents better, discuss your concerns and ideas about law enforcement and conversely create an opportunity for you to get to know your local police officers to discuss our duties and responsibilities. This month Coffee with a Cop will be held on the last Wednesday of the month where you will find a Slave Lake Detachment officer having a Coffee, barring any emergency we are attending. Coffee with a

Cop will be held:

- at the FIX, 317 Main Street Northwest, Slave Lake, on September 24th, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Feel free to stop in and have a Coffee (or a Pop) with us.

Email Questions

In order to seek important input from all stakeholders and residents, the Slave Lake RCMP will be completing monthly police briefs (like this one) in order to keep the public aware of our activities in the communities. In addition, we encourage interaction and anyone with any inquiries, questions, or comments can contact us at: KSLAVELAKEDET@rcmp-grc.gc.ca During each monthly police brief members of the detachment will answer a few of the questions asked or provide education on a topic identified from the community. We look forward to hearing from you.
