Town of Slave Lake Adopts Updated Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw
The Town of Slave Lake is pleased to announce that Municipal Development Plan (MDP) Bylaw #14-2025 and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) #15-2025 received third reading during the Committee of the Whole meeting of Council on August 12, 2025. With third reading now complete, both bylaws are officially in effect and can be reviewed online at the following link: https://www.slavelake.ca/2321/2025-Bylaws-Library.
The Municipal Development Plan is the Town’s long-range blueprint for sustainable growth and development over the next 20 years. It outlines the vision, goals, and policies that guide decision-making on land use, infrastructure, housing, economic development, recreation, and environmental stewardship.
The Land Use Bylaw works alongside the MDP to provide the detailed regulations that govern how land within the Town can be developed and used. It defines zoning districts, permitted and discretionary uses, building height and setback requirements, and other regulations designed to balance growth with quality of life.
A Collaborative Process
These bylaws are the result of 18 months of collaboration between the Town’s Planning and Development Department, members of Council, key stakeholders, and the general public.Throughout the process, community members contributed their insights and priorities through open houses, surveys, workshops, and public hearings. The result is a set of guiding documents that reflect Slave Lake’s shared vision for a vibrant, resilient, and inclusive community.
“Updating our MDP and LUB is a important step in Slave Lake’s growth,” said Joanna Raymond, Director of Planning and Development “The community’s input was invaluable, and these updated bylaws will help ensure that growth is well-planned, responsive to our needs, and aligned with our long-term vision.”
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to review the newly adopted documents to better understand the policies and regulations that shape the future of Slave Lake.
