Slave Lake RCMP offers tips for snowbirds and holiday travellers to prevent mail theft while away

Slave Lake, Alta. Whether you’re escaping to sunnier locations or visiting family and friends, the RCMP is urging snowbirds and holiday travellers to take extra precautions to protect their mail and deliveries while they are away, keep their property secure, and prevent opportunistic theft.

Slave Lake RCMP recommends the following measures to ensure your mail and packages remain secure during your absence:

  • Canada Post offers a Mail Hold service, temporarily stopping mail delivery while you’re away. Alternatively, you can use a Mail Forwarding service to send your mail to a trusted friend or family member’s address for safekeeping.
  • If you’re planning a shorter trip, enlist the help of a trusted neighbour or friend to collect your mail and packages daily.
  • If you’re expecting deliveries while away, consider using a secure parcel locker or selecting a pick-up location with the delivery service.
  • For long-term travellers, installing a secure mail slot or drop box can be an effective way to receive letters and small packages without worrying about them being stolen.
  • A comprehensive home security system, including cameras, doorbell cameras, and motion-activated lighting, can deter thieves and alert you to any unusual activity at your property. Be sure to install visible signage indicating that your home is under surveillance, which can discourage potential mail thieves.
  • Before leaving, pause any subscription services that deliver to your home, such as newspapers or magazines.

Slave Lake RCMP offers tips on staying safe while snowmobiling this season

Slave Lake, Alta. – Snowmobiling is an exciting way to explore the great outdoors during winter. However, operating a snowmobile requires preparation, awareness, and adherence to safety practices to ensure a fun and incident-free ride.

Slave Lake RCMP recommends the following tips to keep you safe while enjoying your snowmobiling adventures this winter:

  • Inspect your snowmobile before your outing for mechanical issues, including brakes, lights, fuel levels, and engine performance.
  • Bring a fully charged phone, first aid kit, tool kit, flashlight, extra fuel, and spare parts such as belts and spark plugs.
  • Wear warm, layered clothing, insulated gloves, windproof jacket, snow pants and a properly fitted helmet for snowmobiling.
  • Familiarize yourself with the trails and terrain before you head out. Use official maps, and always remember to stay on marked and groomed trails to avoid hazards.
  • Monitor forecasts and avoid snowmobiling during extreme cold, snowstorms, or low visibility. In mountainous areas, check avalanche forecasts and avoid high-risk zones.
  • If crossing frozen water, check that ice thickness is at least 25 cm (10 in) for snowmobiles and avoid areas with flowing water or cracks.
  • Never ride alone; travelling with a group ensures help is available in an emergency. And always let someone know your route and expected return time.
  • Avoid alcohol or drugs before and during your ride.
  • Consider taking a snowmobile safety course to learn proper handling and emergency response techniques.
