August 2024 Slave Lake RCMP Release
During the month of July, the Slave Lake Detachment responded to a total of 657 calls for service, which included:
- Assault (x 25)
- Break and Enter ( x 8)
- Utter Threats (x 8)
- Theft (x 14)
- Mischief – Damage to Property (x 15)
- Causing a Disturbance, Mischief (Nuisance) (x 68)
- Mental Health (x 5)
- Suspicious Person / Vehicle / Property (x 47)
- Wellbeing Checks (x 12)
Slave Lake RCMP arrest youth following bear spray incident
Slave Lake, Alta - On July 6th, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Slave Lake RCMP were notified of a disturbance at the Slave Lake fair grounds. Officers were informed that an individual
had discharged bear spray among the fairgoers and fled the scene. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of Slave Lake RCMP a thorough investigation was conducted. The suspect
involved in this incident was quickly identified and apprehended without further issues.
One youth was charged with the following offences:
- Assault with a weapon x9
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Mischief
Due to the age of the persons involved, no further information will be released.
Your Slave Lake RCMP would like to extend its gratitude to the Slave Lake Fire and EMS teams for their immediate response. A specialized treatment area was established to provide care
to all those affected. We would also like to thank members of the public who provided critical assistance during the incident. Your cooperation and quick thinking were instrumental in
bringing this situation to a quick resolution.

Slave Lake RCMP General Investigation Section lays charges in drug trafficking investigation
Slave Lake, Alta. – On July 19, 2024, Slave Lake General Investigation Section, the Slave Lake RCMP, Faust RCMP, Lakeshore Regional Police Service and the Alberta RCMP Roving Traffic Unit
North, with the assistance of a Narcotic Detection Dog, executed a search warrant on a residence which concluded a 7-month long investigation on a suspected drug house in the
southwest quadrant of Slave Lake. As a result of the search warrant, RCMP officers seized drugs believed to be Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Psilocybin and MDMA, drug trafficking
paraphernalia, unstamped cigarettes, electronics, ammunition, weapons and a large sum of Canadian Currency.
Gordon Elwyn Macdonald (36), a resident of Slave Lake, was charged with the following:
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (x4)
- Selling tobacco products
- Trafficking in property obtained by crime
- Fail to comply with release order condition (x2)
- Possession of a Weapon contrary to order (x6)
Following a judicial hearing, Macdonald was remanded in custody and his next scheduled court date in the Alberta Court of Justice in Slave Lake is on August 21, 2024.
“This joint operation shows the importance of strong working relationships in order to disrupt individuals that may have otherwise caused greater harm to our community,” says Staff
Sergeant Casey Bruyns, Slave Lake Detachment Commander. “Should you notice any suspicious drug activity I encourage you to report to help with future investigations.”
Slave Lake RCMP arrest two males for ATV theft and locate home-made firearm
Slave Lake, Alta. – On July 23, 2024, at approximately 7:30 P.M., Slave Lake RCMP received a report of two males that were trespassing on a rural property and then stole an ATV from a
residence on the Old Smith Highway in the MD of Lesser Slave River approximately 30 kilometers from Slave Lake.
RCMP attended and located two males matching the description who fled into the bush and then into the river. RCMP were able to apprehend them both and place them under
arrest. While conducting a search Incidental to arrest RCMP located a home-made shotgun belonging to one of the involved parties.
As a result of the investigation Ruben Richard Houle (27), who is a resident of Slave Lake is charged with:
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5000
- Possession of a Weapon dangerous to the Public Peace
- Possession of a Firearm without valid licence
- Possession of a Firearm while Prohibited by Order (x4)
Also as a result of the investigation, Dusty Yellowknee (27), who is also a resident of Slave Lake is charged with:
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5000
- Fail to Comply with Undertaking
Both Houle and Yellowknee had a judicial interim release hearing and were remanded to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Slave Lake on August 14 and August 28, 2024,
respectively.
“These results would not be possible if it were not for the quick 911 call from the victim who also provided a detailed description,” says Staff Sergeant Casey Bruyns, Slave Lake RCMP
Detachment Commander. “By working together, this case was solved quickly and these offenders are now before the courts.”

- Lock your doors at night
- Lock your garage or shed.
- Ensure all yard tools & recreational equipment is safely stored, preferably in a locked garage or shed.
- Remove all keys from vehicles and lock the doors; securely store any off-highway vehicles.
- Consider installing a home alarm; if you already have one, set your alarm before going to sleep.
- Use motion sensor lights on the exterior of your property.
Coffee with a Cop
The Slave Lake RCMP is dedicated to maintaining direct open lines of communication with the communities we serve. We would like to get to know area residents better, discuss your
concerns and ideas about law enforcement and conversely create an opportunity for you to get to know your local police officers to discuss our duties and responsibilities. This month
Coffee with a Cop will be held on the last Thursday of the month where you will find a Slave Lake Detachment officer having coffee, barring any emergency we are attending. This month
