A Home Based Business
Most businesses operating within the Town of Slave Lake must obtain a valid business license. Additionally, businesses located within Residential Districts must secure approval from the Planning Department or the Municipal Planning Commission before commencing operations.
Types of Home-Based Businesses and Requirements:
Home Craft/Child Care (Type A)—A home craft is a small-scale profit-making activity often derived from a hobby or child care services limited to a maximum of five children at any given time. These activities must be conducted within the operator's private residence.
No Development Permit Required
Key Features:
- Minimal client interaction on-site.
- No additional employees.
- May include activities such as sewing, tailoring, music instruction, tutoring, or similar domestic crafts.
- An office may be included but is limited to a desk and telephone.
Direct Sales (Type B) -
This category involves home-based businesses that sell goods or services directly to customers at off-site locations, such as client homes or other venues.
No Development Permit Required
Key Features:
- Minimal on-site client contact.
- No additional employees.
- May include a small home office, limited to a desk and telephone.
Professional Services (Type C)—A professional service is a small business or office operated from a residence by the occupant.
Development Permit Required Fee: $100.00
Key Features:
- No warehousing or sale of goods.
- No additional employees.
- Limited to a desk, telephone, and related equipment.
- Examples: accountants, doctors, lawyers, bookkeepers, contractors, business consultants, and architects.
Bed and Breakfast (Type D): A bed and breakfast is a dwelling offering temporary accommodations for up to four units (without cooking facilities) for travelers or vacationers.
Development Permit Required Fee: $200.00
Key Features:
- Maximum number of units depends on available on-site parking.
- Must be operated by a resident of the dwelling.
Other Home-Based Businesses (Type E) - This category includes home-based businesses not covered under other types. Operations may extend to accessory residential buildings, provided parking requirements are met.
Development Permit Required Fee: $200.00
Key Features:
- Warehousing or storing goods is permitted, but all storage must be indoors.
- Direct client interaction is allowed but limited to one group at a time.
- No more than two non-resident employees may work on-site simultaneously.
