Downtown Revitalization Project (Update as of April 12th, 2021)

Winter - Downtown - Drone

The Town of Slave Lake is commencing the Downtown Revitalization Project as part of our work to help stimulate economic growth and activity on Main Street at the downtown core. Open public spaces around the Rennie Hall Plaza along with the installation of a trail system to connect the downtown with the lakeshore are our area of focus for this project.

Reinvigorating the downtown core supports locally owned small businesses, sparks local entrepreneurship, and beautifies the area.  It helps attract people to Main Street as they gather for activities, entertainment, and unique shopping and eating experiences.  A vibrant Main Street serves as a commerce destination for residents and visitors alike.

Green Space Alliance (GSA) has been retained to lead this project and a small Project Management Committee (PMC) has been established to lead the engagement process with stakeholders and the public.

Along with the Downtown Revitalization Project, the Town Administration will also complete a review of the existing traffic control devices/signs and sidewalk asset assessment on the main street to enhance the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Where are we now with the progress?

The consultation process has already begun, and we are working to determine options for the open spaces around Rennie Hall Plaza. We have sent out invitations to stakeholders to establish a Steering Committee for this project. The intent is to communicate with the Steering Committee to be followed by engagement with Council through an Open House. Final engagement with the Public members will be scheduled through an appropriate virtual platform.

Next Step?

  • Complete at least one engagement session with the Steering Committee members by the end of April 2021.

We will continue sharing more information as the project progresses.
