Summer is finally upon us, now if we could just get the weather to cooperate then life would be fantastic!
Soon the kids will be out of school, summer holidays will start and lots of families will be looking for things to do. Between Canada Day and Riverboat Daze it looks like its going to be a great start to July.
This year Canada celebrates its 150 anniversary. It’s a great time to show some support for our great Country. I love Canada and would not live anywhere else.
But I will say that I look in envy at the United States as there is a strong sense of patriotism across the border. I often think we could learn a lesson from them and show a little deeper pride in our own country. If there was ever a time to show that pride its this July 1st for the 150th birthday.
Jill and the rest of our town staff have put together some fantastic events for Canada Day. The event will take place at Schurter park form 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on July 1st. There will be a child’s parade, entertainment, activities, different booths, food and drinks, etc. Should be a great time. The Chamber of Commerce is letting the Town do Fireworks this year. In the past they have done fireworks with Riverboat Daze but this year we will be doing them at dark on July 1st, they are tentatively scheduled for 11:00 PM on Canada Day. They will be launched from the airport, so get there early for a spectacular show.
I will also highlight that we have been able to do this due to some sponsorship of local businesses. That being said they are still looking for some help in that regards and if you are able to contribute please give Jill a call at 780-849-8028 at the MRC.
We will just get Canada Day done and Riverboat Daze will start the following week. The Chamber of Commerce organizes this weekend long event, and have always done a great job.
The Chamber has a new President and Vice President and we are excited to see some of the changes Frankie Giroux and Kim Hughes are making. The parade will take place on Friday evening and we are shutting down Main Street Friday, at 6:00 A.M to have a giant block party after the parade. There will be over 60 vendors downtown with summer deals on, a variety of food vendors, live music, and even a beer gardens, hosted at the Legion. If you are looking for one of summer’s best Friday nights, I promise this is one of them.
Then Satuday will be more activities for the family! The Chamber is hosting a fun kids activity day downtown, near E.G Walhstrom School, as well as Sandblast at Devonshire (For those who don’t know what Sandblast is, its a revival of the Sandsculpture championships the Town has held in the past!) and the Duck Drop, at Gilwood Golf Course!
But that’s not everything, a Pancake breakfast Sunday will round out the weekend.
While all these events are taking place around the region, you also may want to take in the Midway, that is happening just west of Walmart.
For more information on what is happening here, keep an eye on the Riverboat Daze Facebook page for the most up to date information.
Canada 150 will round out this summer on August 26 with a floating parade down the river which should be pretty cool to say the least. There still tickets left to see Wayne Gretzky, Oilmen’s golf is always a blast and the Golf Course is looking great.
All in all it should be a great summer with lots of fun activities. Thanks to all the organizations and volunteers who help out to make all this happen and the businesses that provide financial support. We have a great Country and an amazing community.
