Energy Efficient Furnace and Power Vented Water Heaters Intake and Exhaust Freezing.
It seems that our heating systems fail during cold snaps, just when we need them the most. One very common problem is that the intake or the exhaust on energy efficient furnaces can become obstructed with snow or ice. Any restriction will prevent the furnace from working. These are plastic lines usually exiting the side of the house. These are typically separate lines 2” to 3” in diameter. They are usually located just a foot or two apart.
They often have a screen to prevent birds, mice, etc. from entering. The intake screen can become plugged with ice crystals or snow, or if the wind blows the exhaust towards the intake it can form ice on the screen. The exhaust can form icicles at the discharge and can freeze over. You should check these periodically in the winter and clear any snow or ice that you find. If your furnace or vented water heater stops working this should be the first thing to check and could save you a maintenance call and a cold house or shower.
