On December 3rd, 2019 the Slave Lake RCMP were made aware of a phishing scam involving gift cards via email. The email asks the victim to assist them by purchasing gift cards, scratching the back barcode and taking a photograph. The victim is then asked to send the photo back and they will cover the cost and pay the victim back right away.
Resident’s are reminded to not send gift cards of any sort to unknown individuals via email or telephone. If residents recognize the name of the sender, contact them first prior to purchasing any gift cards. The Canadian government will never ask for gift cards from residents to assist solving a matter. When in doubt, contact the nearest RCMP detachment and ask for advice.
